Students just finished creating their clay coil pots!! 3rd graders learned about clay, what it is made from, and how it has been used to create different types of vessels throughout history. Working with red clay, students used the coil method for creating their pieces. A clear glaze was painted on to make their pieces shine. 3rd grade students did a wonderful job making their coil pots.

3rd grade students learned about Pablo Picasso and his unique painting style. We looked at and discussed several of his artworks and talked about how the subjects in his paintings didn’t look ‘real’ or ‘normal’ and why. Students then took some inspiration from Picasso to create their own Pablo Picasso face. Using only construction paper and glue to create their artworks, the students did an amazing job creating their faces.
The second project for our balance unit is the radial balance project. Students created an optical illusion artwork that also shows radial balance. Simply by drawing various types of lines and coloring and smudging with oil pastels, students are creating quite stunning works! Beautiful artworks third grade!
3rd grade students learned about symmetry by creating an abstract symmetrical design. First, students created their design on their paper and cut out the pieces. Next, they created a ‘map’ on their background paper so they knew where to glue down their pieces to ensure their artwork would be symmetrical. Finally, they glued down their cut out pieces to their background paper. The results look wonderful!
3rd grade had completed their line and shape artworks inspired by the surrealist painter Joan Miró. Students ‘took a dot for a walk’ in order to create their overlapping lines and colored the resulting shapes using markers. The final step was to add a few final black shapes and/or lines using black construction paper. Students did a nice job of creating these abstract works!
