For this project, students first looked at pictures of different cities and buildings. We discussed the shapes of buildings and how to draw them. Students then used this knowledge to draw a city of their own on a piece of foam to be printed later. Next, we talked about warm and cool colors. Students used watercolors to paint a warm background and a cool background for their cities. We then learned a little about printmaking and printed our cities on our warm and cool backgrounds. The results look amazing!!!!

1st grade students looked at and discussed several artworks created by Vincent Van Gogh. While discussing the paintings, students discovered that Van Gogh’s brushstrokes looked like lines. Students then created their own version of Starry Night by drawing different types of lines!
1st grade students continued their work with line and created an entire wall filled with figures inspired by Keith Haring! Students loved working together to create their figures. The wall is beautiful and really brightens up our downstairs! Great job 1st grade!
1st Grade students have been learning about Keith Haring. We discussed Haring's work, looking at his artworks that focused on people and also his use of line. Students enjoyed practicing drawing each other and making their Keith Haring person. Students completed their person by adding some lines to indicate movement. 1st Grade has just finished their artworks inspired by Piet Mondrian (Pronounced: Pete Mon-dree-on). We took our inspiration from Mondrian and focused on some elements he used in his paintings: vertical and horizontal lines and primary colors. Students did a wonderful job on this project; the artworks look so beautiful hanging in the hallway!.
The first project of the year for 1st grade was Line Lion. This was a review from kindergarten about types of lines. 1st grade students used oil pastels to create their lions by drawing many different types of lines. This is a great one day project to begin the year with!
